Seven teams from surrounding Waikato Secondary Schools took part in the 2017 regional qualifier for NZ Secondary School Nationals. The event known as the Inter-Collegiate Championship Day to Waikato Secondary Schools took part at the Hamilton Golf Club – St Andrews Course on Monday 15th May 2017. The format for the event is gross with the best 3 of 4 scores counting towards the teams total.
Hamilton Boys High School who had three teams competing were looking to win the regional qualifier for the second year running, and were looking good through nine holes with two players scoring under par. St Peters School Cambridge were the biggest threat for the defending champs with number one player Focus Jonglikit and number two player Sean Bonenkamp playing around even par golf through the first 9 holes.
Coming down the stretch it was neck and neck between these two schools that had looked to have a few shots on the rest of their competitors. Tyler Wood (Hamilton Boys High) missed his birdie putt on the par 3 18th and signed for a score of 4over 76. Focus Jonglikit signed for 72 and with the 2shot NZCR difference for the men and women, would post a score of 2under par 70. Hitomi Tamura (Cambridge High School) would make her birdie putt on 18 to post a 2 over 74, which would be reduced to even par 72 with the NZCR difference.
In the following group Hamilton Boys High captain James Fellows-Ford was leading by example, mixing 3 birdies and 2 bogeys James signed for 1under par 71. Zeta Syme (Cambridge High) posted a score of 78 which was reduced to 76. Whilst St Peters number two Sean Bonenkamp had a rough end to his round eventually signing for 79.
Oak Archvarin steadied the ship for the St Peters team with a credible 75 gross, but this wasn’t enough to catch the Hamilton Boys High Team after Luke Kidd signed for even par 72. William Leigh (St Peters) and Michael Jones (HBHS) were the non-counters on the day.
After the totals were tallied it was the Hamilton Boys High School Team who came out on top with a team score of 219 which was 5 shots clear of St Peters on 224. Cambridge High School secured 3rd spot with a combined score of 332. Best individual gross went to St Peters number 1 Foucs Jonglikit after the score reducuction, whilst the best nett of the day was won by Cullen Aisable (HBHS) with a score of 2under par 70; this was by lot from fellow school member Todd Higgs with 70.
Hamilton Boys High School will now compete in the NZ Secondary School Finals to be played at the Hawkes Bay Golf Club on September 4th 2017. After finishing runners-up in the 2016 Nationals, we wish the school, team and management all the best in the National Event. Bring the trophy back to the mighty Waikato!!
