2016 Primary/Intermediate Schools Golf Championships

Friday 28th October was the annual Primary & Intermediate Schools Golf Championships held again at the Ngahinepouri Golf Club.

The amazing response from the region and schools saw 87 participants come to the 2016 event.
With player packs, warm up drills and fun SNAG Games there was something for all to enjoy.

Division One was won by Waikato representative Zahraa Bester. Zahraa was representing Rototuna Junior High School and shot a score of 42 gross off the regular length course for a one shot victory over Jake Clare (Berkley Intermediate School). Jakob Bird, another from the new Junior High School in Rototuna was a further shot behind in 3rd spot.

Division Two has been developed for those who are working towards a handicap and are more comfortable playing 9 holes on a shortened course.  This year it was local player Liam Hill who triumphed with a score of 41 which included a 2 on the par 4, 2nd hole. He was 4 shots clear of chasing players Ryan Forster (Horsham Downs School) and Jindh Bhullar (Turaki Primary School). Jacob Graham (Berkley Intermediate) and Waatea Waudby (Nawton School) were a further 2 shots back with scores of 47 and would share 4th spot.

Division Three is a 3 person ambrose division, which is a great way to introduce new players to the game. With having fun the goal of the day, the 17 teams who entered had a blast. The Division three competition was played over 5 holes, where each player would play rotate style ambrose on each hole. The Manawaru #1 team came out on top with some impressive golf scoring 28 over the 5 holes. Following behind on a score of 31 was a local team from Korakonui School. Owhango #3 team made the trip worthwhile with an impressive 33 shots for their 5 holes, and the 3 Muskateers from Ngahinepouri School would finish in 4th place on a score of 35.

Overall, an amazing day, which ran smoothly, players were able to participate in some fun games before they teed off including a fun “Learn to Golf” warm-up session for all Division Three players. All players were presented with a player pack before they played and a BBQ run by the club was available for all players and parents to partake in.

Waikato Golf would like to thank the Ngahinepouri Golf Club for providing their amazing facilities and course, as well as a special mention to Jenny and Colin Cowan for their hard work preparing the masses of food for all the participants. A huge congratulations to all the players who participated in this year’s event, we look forward to 2017 when we can do it all again!
