2016 Waikato Age Group Championship

There was an exciting end to the 2016 Waikato Age Group Championships at Cambridge Golf Club.

A 2 man playoff between Willy Eady and Kevin Koong was needed to find a winner of the 2016 Under 19 Boys Division after both players finished their 27 holes five under par.

The players were sent down the 1st hole in the sudden death playoff, in which both hit their tee shots down the middle of the fairway, Koong was first with his approach hitting it to approximately 20foot to a back right flag position. Eady then trumped Koong by hitting it to 8 feet. Koong’s birdie attempt slid by on the low side, which left Eady with an opportunity to wrap it up on the first play-off hole.  An opportunity that he took advantage of -slotting his down-hill putt and taking out the 2016 Waikato Age Group Championship.
New Zealand representative Alanna Campbell played her way to victory with a solid performance posting a total score of 1 under par for the 27 hole event. Alanna finished 6 shots clear of local player Zeta Syme (113) and Bay of Plenty representative Jode Ngaheu  (113).

In the under 16 Boys Division Jake Lee proved he enjoys the Cambridge track after winning the Under 14 Boys in 2015 he backed it up by winning the Under 16 Boys Division in 2016. Jake had scores of 76 and 33 to finish 1 over par and clinch victory by 4 shots over Nathan Mayes (113) and Cameron Harlock (114).
Five girls battled it out for the trophy in the Under 16 Girls Division, and local Cambridge golfer Ella Cockburn came out on top. Ella had scores of 84 and 39 to win the Under 16 Girls by two shots over Hamilton player Zoann Huang.

It was great to see an increase in Under 14 Players in this year’s event, 18 Boys took to the fairways with Springfield player Hoje Kang coming out on top. Hoje had scores of 78 and 36 for a total (114), and three shots clear of Jaewoo Son on 117.
The Under 14 Girls Division, like the Under 19 Boys, had an exciting conclusion, after a three way playoff which went to the second extra hole.
Silvia Brunotti, Subin Wui, and Darae Chung all finished with totals of 118 for their 27 holes.
The girls were taken down to the 18th tee for a sudden death playoff, all three players hit the green with their approach shots on the first playoff hole with Brunotti coming closest to birdie, her putt up the hill from 20feet slammed in to the back of the cup and jumped out the other side. All players had tap in pars and went back to the tee. Silvia and Subin both hit their tee shots down the middle, with Darae finding the left hand trees. After Silvia hit her approach long left and Subin missed the green pin high right, it was up to Darae to see if she could find some magic from the trees. Darae punched out just short of the green.  After hitting her 3rd shot to 4 feet, it put the pressure on Silvia and Subin, both players chipped on and missed their putts leaving Darae the chance for the win with an uphill putt which she rolled in the middle. A nerve raking end to the event for the girls but an exciting one all the same. Darae Chung from Shandon Golf Club took out the event, with Subin 2nd on countback and Silvia 3rd.
